I have been a parent in the GTIYO for five years. The time in GTIYO has been a wonderful experience for my daughter. She has increased her passion, her confidence, and involvement along with her desire to succeed. She and I are both interested in learning about and embracing differences, and music is a tool that we can use to do that. I have experience working with students and families in my career as an elementary school counselor. I see first hand both personally and professionally the benefits the GTIYO can have for students.
T.j. Smith was born and raised in Toledo. He enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. When he’s not with his family, you can find him working as a trainer and fleet manager for Buckeye Broadband. His daughter, Lexi is going into her third year with GTiYO. As the manager of GTiYO, he hopes to provide students a place to grow as both people and musicians.
Jamie grew up in the Toledo area where she studied Civil Engineering in college. She has been a engineering instructor at Whitmer High School for the last 17 years. Jamie’s daughter Nora has been a member of GTIYO for the last year and her youngest daughter, Rory is a member of the youth orchestra. Jamie has been married to her husband Matt for 21 years and in her free time she loves to read, watch soccer and travel with her family.
John was born and raised on a large dairy and agricultural farm about 45 minutes west of Toledo in Ridgeville Corners. John graduated from BGSU with degrees in computer science and education. After working briefly at Owens Corning in Toledo, he has spent the last 22 years teaching in the Sylvania school system. His daughter, Michaela, joined GTiYO in January of 2021 as a cellist and is currently going into her sophomore year at Sylvania Southview High School. John is Married to Mike Rosania and has a son, Jonathan, who is a senior at Southview. They love to travel when possible and Cancun, Mexico is one of their favorite destinations.
Jason was born in Florida and raised in the beautiful mountains of east Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee and the University of Missouri with degrees in Music and Music Education. He taught in the Tennessee public schools and at the University of Missouri before moving to Toledo in 2004 to serve as a faculty member at the University of Toledo. His daughter, Olivia, joined GTiYO in Fall of 2017 as a cellist and is beginning her 8th grade year at Ottawa Hills. Jason is married to Point Place native Katie, and has a daughter, Reagan, who will be a freshman this year at the University of Michigan. They love spending time with their dog Sadie, home cooking, college football, and travel.
